Maria by Callas

1h 54m Documentary 2019

Maria By Callas is an intimate look at the legendary Greek-American opera singer, completely in her own words. Callas believed that two different women lived in her: Maria, the woman who longed for a normal life; and Callas, the public figure and icon. Her adoring public expected a transcendent experience every time she stepped on stage and could quickly become outraged when they felt she had given them anything less. Told through performances, TV interviews, home movies, family photographs, private letters and unpublished memoirs—nearly all of which have never been shown to the public—the film reveals the essence of an extraordinary woman who rose from humble beginnings in New York City to become a glamorous international superstar and one of the greatest artists of all time.

What the critics say….

“a dazzling documentary from Tom Volf…that allow Callas to speak — and sing — for herself. No narrator, no talking heads feeding you insights, just the lady letting it rip on stage and off….it’s indisputably up close and personal” - Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

“It’s an aching compilation of a woman branded as difficult yet adored as one of operas’ biggest stars in the 20th century….offers a new side to her legend, one that was also vulnerable, smart but also lonely, a fate that sometimes befalls headstrong women…. (It is) a detailed time capsule of high society at that time” - Monica Castillo, Roger

“Maria By Callas” is short on facts and biographical detail, it expertly presents an emotional essence of this performer, leaving you both shaken and stirred by the extent of her gifts and the way they connected to both audiences and her tumultuous life” - Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times.
