The Peanut Butter Falcon
A modern Mark Twain-style adventure story, The Peanut Butter Falcon begins when Zak (22), a young man with Downs Syndrome, runs away from a residential nursing home to follow his dream to become a professional wrestler by attending the wrestling school of his idol, The Salt Water Redneck. A strange turn of events pairs him with Tyler, a small time outlaw on the run, who becomes Zak’s unlikely coach and ally. Together they wind their way through deltas, elude capture, drink whisky, find God and catch fish. A feel good delight, featuring a captivating performance from Zack Gottsagen, who, like his character, didn’t let the fact that he has Downs Syndrome stop him from pursuing his dream of becoming an actor.
What the critics say….
“Shia LaBeouf and Zack Gottsagen are a dream double act in this unlikely buddy movie. The heart of The Peanut Butter Falcon beats to a rhythm that harks back to the ragged romanticism of a Huck Finn adventure, a time when outlaws were armed with charm rather than a tyre iron…….a story plucked out on a twanging banjo and the audience’s heartstrings…….this shambling buddy movie really works” - Wendy Ide, The Guardian
“This is LaBeouf at his best, stripped down to his bare elements and bookended by two luminous performances from Gottsagen and (Dakota) Johnson…warms the heart with its parental tenderness” - Beth Webb, Empire Magazine
“The Peanut Butter Falcon gets two cheers…for its redemptive warmth and a troupe of actors unfailingly bringing out the best in each other” - Tim Robie, Daily Telegraph
“This lovely debut feature by Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz traffics in the pleasure of watching intriguing people working through outlandish problems in unlikely ways. Go in expecting the best and you’ll come out smiling.” - Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal
